XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) is the best way to calculate returns on irregular investments. Unlike CAGR which assumes a single investment, XIRR accounts for each cash flow's timing. A positive XIRR means your investment generated returns above your expectations.
How is this calculated?
XIRR is the rate that makes the Net Present Value (NPV) of all cash flows equal to zero. It is calculated iteratively using the Newton-Raphson method: ∑ [CFi / (1 + r)^(di/365)] = 0, where CFi = cash flow at day di from the first investment.
